I've been practicing Krav Maga with Lance and a buddy of ours, Edward (founder of Go For Vertical), for a few weeks now and I can’t tell you how much I am enjoying it—the deeper lessons, the results in the body, mixing up my workouts. Krav Maga is a fighting system developed by the Israel Defense and Security Forces. You can learn a lot about it with a quick Google and YouTube search.

Originally, I was drawn to this (and kickboxing) because I really needed to mix up my exercise routine. While I really enjoy the gym, I was craving moving and using my body in different ways than just lifting. And Krav Maga has served this purpose well.

However, I have also discovered great enjoyment in learning self-defense techniques. I am a firm believer in non-violence—in thought, word and action—towards oneself and others. But I also believe that one absolutely has the right to stand up and defend oneself in dangerous situations, and learning how to do so with proper technique and practice is a good thing. Something I really love about Krav Maga is it teaches you how to not only fight back, but ever more importantly, how to diffuse a situation and avoid a fight and physical confrontation altogether.

Currently we are practicing together twice per week, in the basement of the Warehouse here. It's super fight-club-cool, I have to say. Soon, we plan on opening up our sessions to others with self-defense classes for the LGBTQ Community in Tucson. Sponsored by PHILANDRY and Go For Vertical, we will be offering a very basic intro level class, as well as a more intermediate class for folks with a little more experience. So if you are in Tucson, stay tuned for the official announcement on social media. It will be open to everyone. All will be welcome.

Until then, be well and happy. I'll be writing my next blog post soon.
